Greenhills Amateur Basketball Association

President's report

March 2011

Welcome back to another season of basketball

Welcome back to another season of basketball, I hope all teams are settled and enjoying their basketball.

With the beginning of a new year I send out this timely reminder of the joy that children receive hearing their parents barrack for their team and the impact of the parent who yells discouragingly to their children. Unfortunately, I was reminded of this at a recent game I attended.

As a club, we encourage all parents to come along to matches and applaud, call out encouragement but not abuse. This means abuse to any coach, referees, opposition team players or their own children.

The club encourages all of it’s members, parents included to abide by a code of conduct from Basketball Victoria. The code is set out for coaches, players, officials and parents. I have summarized main points in regard to parents code of conduct, for further information, please refer to the information section of this website.

Have a great season and please:

  1. Encourage your children to participate for their own interest and enjoyment, not yours.
  2. Encourage children to always play by the rules.
  3. Teach children that an honest effort is always as important as a victory.
  4. Focus on developing skills and playing the game. Reduce the emphasis on winning.
  5. A child learns best by example. Applaud good play by all teams.
  6. Do not criticise your or others’ children in front of others.
  7. Accept decisions of all referees as being fair and called to the best of their ability.
  8. Set a good example by your own conduct, behaviour and appearance.
  9. Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from sporting activities.
  10. Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every person.
  11. Show appreciation for volunteer coaches, officials and administrators.
  12. Keep children in your care under control.
  13. Always respect the use of facilities and equipment provided.
